Apple has started previewing today the forthcoming features of its .Mac service through a dedicated page.
The main new feature of .Mac is the look & feel of the web mail client, which now looks like Mail.app and probably uses modern Web 2.0 so as to implement drag & drop and more interactivity with the user.
The new features include:
- New look,
- Drag & drop,
- Message pane
- Smart refreshes,
- Quick reply,
- Built-in address book
- Message previews,
- Message flagging,
- Keyboard shortcuts.
More information about the forthcoming .Mac features may be found in this page.
The .Mac membership is priced $99 a year and offers a mail account, syncing features, personnal site creation tools, photocasting and more.

Alas, no mail labels. A nice freeware adds that to my Mail now, and a feature I hope Apple implements more.
Categorizing messages before you file them away is so helpful.

problem is, .mac has such a terrible reputation already I don't think this will help. Being a die hard mac user, I can not justify the downtime of the .mac service and how much they charge. It is a substandard sevice which is conrtrary to everything Apple does. Perhaps they should look into having someone else manage it.
For those of you who want to
For those of you who want to use .Mac, I would suggest purchasing it through Amazon.com. It's $15 cheaper than from Apple and that includes the shipping. [$85]
I use .Mac mainly for the backup capability and the syncing. It's a no brainer. I pay for the privilidge of not having to learn how to sync through one service and backup to another. My time is worth more than that. And it is very reassuring that all of my critical files are stored off site and accessible if the house burns down.[or floats away, I'm in California 8^)]
Also, I haven't had a single problem with .Mac in the last year, although I have to admit, I don't use much of it. My .Mac mail is forwarded to another anddress, so I haven't seen any of the mail problems.

I have used .Mac since it was iTools and free. It is my main email address and has never given me any problems.

anyone have any ideas? its frustrating.
thanks
BEWARE if you travel...
BEWARE if you travel...
Looks like the new batch of features will be adding more and more heavy lifting to Apple's already over-taxed servers... yes, folks, if you really want a functional web-based email system for travel, find a mail provider who actually knows how the internet works.
Wherein dot-Mac fails the performance test to deliver reliable email.
Now, in our benchtesting, NetSol-based email is consistently out-performing Apple's mail 60 to 1.

If you're sitting on blazing fast internet connect and never go anywhere -- disregard the above. After all, when Apple's mail server is down, you can always go do something else.
