UPDATE (24/10 - 03:28 GMT): Reliable sources informed us that Apple will be releasing at least one product on October 24.
A source close to Apple informed MacScoop that the company may be preparing to launch refreshed notebooks by the next ten days.
Though the source only mentioned a possible update of the MacBook, both the MacBook and MacBook Pro line-ups are rumoured to be updated with the latest Intel Core 2 Duo processors released in September. If the new MacBook includes this new processor, it is obvious that Apple will update its MacBook Pro line-up at the same day or a little earlier.
Earlier this month, Engadget claimed it had Apple Store Europe related sources claiming the MacBook line-up would be updated in November while the German site MacGadget.de has also recently made similar claims specifically regarding the MacBook Pro line-up. We don't believe the report we obtained is coming from the same sources as one of these sites though.
Meanwhile, our checks indicated that MacBook and MacBook Pro stocks are at their lowest point at suppliers. A phenomen we usually notice at quarter ends/begins and that we had also noticed last month. Historically, low supplier stocks do not always result in line-up refreshes.
In early September we also published a report predicting MacBook Pro updates at Photokina but it's now seems obvious that the source was not reliable.
While, the source of this latest report has proven its accuracy in the past and as release dates often depend on multiple factors, we would anyway advise caution before allowing this, or other similar reports to affect your buying decisions. Please don't cancel your orders after reading this!

Since the first shipments of
Since the first shipments of Core 2 Duo chips were the lower speed versions and Apple wouldn't introduce them in Macbooks before Macbook Pros, they waited until the faster chips were available. Intel announced availablity at the end of October and Apple will be one of the early adopters shipping both versions. The Phototkina debut was merely wishful thinking.

Since the semester has begun and many schools offer discounts on Apple products for the students it would be rather disappointing if the update would take place shortly after the discount selling stops.

I do think the prices will go down though. The Core 2 Duo is of much lower cost and more efficiency than previous Intel's CPU(s). Intel cut prices up to 45%-60% when the new line of Core 2 Duo was released.
Now I HOPE Apple does not take the price up through the roof.

Intel did not reduce the
Intel did not reduce the prices of Merom compared to Yonah when it was introduced. You might be confusing Merom with Conroe. Conroe is cheaper than Merom. However, Merom will be used in MacBooks(pros) not Conroe. Conroe is a desktop chip too hot even for the iMac.
A little price drop on the
A little price drop on the MacBooks and MacBook Pros would definitely help Apple to steal some sales from Dell and HP.
