Readers pointed out that Apple may encounter quality issues with its latest iteration of the MacBook Pro line-up, as a significant number of complaints related to display issues are being posted on Apple's support forums.
The matte-screen version of the MacBook Pro seems to be the most affected by various display issues that users encounter after waking up the computer from sleep mode or when trying to change screen resolution.
Other users report noise coming from the display panel, dead pixels, grainy picture and other flaws related to the MacBook Pro's built-in display as well as its DVI output.
Many of the disappointed users rushed to the Apple support discussion forums to complain about these issues.
Meanwhile, a MacBidouille reader is claiming he has been informed by retail sources that Apple has temporarily halted the production of the matte-screen version of the MacBook Pro. However, the site claims that only a few readers have reported this issue and believes that only a small part of the production is affected.

As management of Brown
As management of Brown Computer Solutions, Inc. An Apple specialist in Vermont, we see new Core2Duo MacBook Pro's coming out of the box daily. Thus far, we've see 0 of the Core2Duo models come back with any problems. I'm writing this post on a 2.33GHz Core2Duo 15" MacBook Pro that has a beautiful Matte screen. I'm sure that customers are not making up problems with screens, but in fact there has been a bad batch of LCD's installed in MacBook Pro's. This would explain a temporary halt in production while Apple investigates the issue. Apple wants to deliver products of the highest quality to keep its great reputation.
I have a new 15" MBP C2D
I have a new 15" MBP C2D which is perfect in every way except the matte screen. Problems include:
- Grainy effect over the entire screen.
- Leaking backlight from bottom left-hand corner.
- A thin white line across the top of the screen.
Have contacted Applecare and they are "on it" - not sure what the result will be. I think Apple "cheaped out" on the screens on these top-of-the-line, expensive, "flagship" machines and now I am literally seeing the result.
The matte screens on the 15"
The matte screens on the 15" MBP's are apparrently crap. I had two dead pixels out ofthe box and awashed-out screen to boot. Perfectly consistent with what I had read about in he various forums before purchasing. What a rip.
As the article states,
As the article states, there's a lot of buzz on the Apple discussion forum about the problems with the new Macbook Pro displays. From what i've read this does not seem to be a problem affecting only few of the MBP C2D owners, but a significant number of them. People have talked about problems (banding, uneven backlighting, grain/sparkle, bad viewing angles) on every single MBP C2D screen on show at various Apple Stores. From various comments and articles I've read that Apple used 2 or 3 manufacturers for the MBP screens and --- apparently -- one or more of them are producing sub-par displays. It seems that the display 9C56 (made by samsung) is the best, but I am not sure if that's the case or whether you can get MBPs with that display.
This is actually quite surprising, as the holiday season is near and you'd expect Apple to have its product line up well-prepared for it. Not so, unfortunately.
They replaced my screen and
They replaced my screen and the anorexic text is gone. Thank f'in God for that.
How many of these complaints
How many of these complaints are authentic? I have heard from second hand sources that there are some people out there who watch for any kind of complaint about Apple, and then fraudulently post the same complaints in various places. Is there any way to check out the authenticity of such complaints. Before publishing them is it possible to confirm that the complainer actually is the purchaser of the Mac in question, and that he/she has actually filed a complaint with Apple or a dealer? Can you follow up to see how it has been resolved?
One legitimate problem in a few computers could be made to look like hundreds by just a few people. I personally know some people who, in my opinion, might do this. If this is happening it could cause serious financial harm to Apple's shareholders such as myself. I have owned personally and for my businesses quite a few Macs and I have never had a problem with any of them. No doubt, as sales volume increases the possibility of problems will increase, but I would like to see proof of such problems. If the media is inqusitive about the authenticity of such reports, perhaps the frauds, if any, would be discouraged. After all, such frauds definitely carry the possibility of serious legal consequences, both civil and criminal.
I posted the story after
I posted the story after having received reports from readers and friends and after having identified some of the issues with my own eyes in outlets selling the MacBook Pro.
As far as I'm concerned, some display suppliers chosen by Apple for this Mac line-up may not be in the Apple's usual quality standards for its high-end laptops.
What I could see with my own eyes is that the screen on some of these new MacBooks (all I've seen) looks "cheap/low-end" and has a "backlight" issue as described by some readers.
I also had some resellers and readers claiming there is no problem with this line-up at all so I might post follow-up on that.
As for MacBidouille's claims, it's up to them to verify/confirm their readers' claims or not. If they do, I'll update the article.

My Mac Book Pro developed the dark screen yesterday, and with NO help from people on the support line at Apple I was UNABLE to get the screen up and runningat all even after resetting the SMU & PRAM. This started EXACTLY after Software Updatting and installing v.10.5.4, so I can no longer get much going
ALL I see is a black screen with "EXTREMELY LITTLE Light". I tried adjusting the screen brightness keys BUT can barely see, as "NO Movement" of the little dots to increase or decrease show the brightness! The Sound keys I can see going up/down (slightly!)
It was purchased in August 2007, which is just short of two weeks of the warranty. on discussions, it seems many people have just come across this problem (ESPECIALLY ON Updatting the MacOSX Leopard to 10.5.4? Apple should be making a BIG effort to correct this problem.
One answer I was looking at was: Can one downgrade the FIRMWARE in order to rectify the problem OR another: Could it be the NVIDIA card which is a problem?
I NEED A FIX NOW Please! Too much to forsake - Do not have ext. monitor or cable!
