Leopard build 9A321: all the new features listed!

The latest build (9A321) of Mac OS X Leopard 10.5 is revealing several great features. We gathered all this information found on other reports and forum postings in one article, for you, Mac OS X fans!

Among them, we find resolution independence, support for the ZFS file system, file recovery, a new installer, more screen savers, improved parental controls, QuickTime and Time Machine.

Resolution Independence:

As its name suggests, the Resolution independence feature makes the the size of the user interface's widgets independent of the screen resolution the user has chosen. It's very useful when you have a high definition display on a laptop. Apple has recently filed a patent so as to protect the way Mac OS X deals with this feature.

ZFS support:

ZFS (Zetabyte File System) is a 128-bit file system by Sun Microsystems which is known to be very reliable and intended to the storage servers market. For the moment, support of ZFS on Mac OS X is limited as it is not possible to use it for the boot partition.

File Recovery:

The file recovery feature is available through the Disk Utility allows you to search your lost files by type. You can chose to look for music, videos, pictures or create a custom type. Apple might also let developers create these custom types for you.

Installer:

The new installer mainly brings further configuration for the Time Machine feature. It's also sees some changes in its appearance.

Parental Controls:

The Parental Controls feature which allows users to restrict the use of some applications for their kids is also a bit improved, it can now write logs and provide reports on everything that was done during the restricted session.

QuickTime:

The new version of QuickTime present in the latest build of Leopard gets improved A/V controls by extensively using the CoreVideo API.

More Screen Savers:

Leopard is said to include a few more screen savers, however we couldn't find any screenshot, we'll update if there is any screenshot out there.

TimeMachine:

TimeMachine is also more polished in this latest build, it now detects any "all new" hard drive connected to it and asks you if you want to use it for backup. It's also apparently the subject of many bug fixes in this build.

iChat's answer-machine:

iChat brings a video answer-machine, allowing you to record a short video that will be streamed when you can't answer to your friends ringing you on iChat.

Your friend can also record a video message for you. Instead of recording, you may also drop a movie from the Finder. That's way cooler than Skype!

CoreAnimation Example:

For developers, Apple now provides a great example for the CoreAnimation API, it's actually the iPod nano ad made with iTunes covers.

Overall stability and performance is said to be quite good, though some known and unknown bugs remain.

Here are the sites I gathered the information from, you may find some further information on each feature as well as some screenshots:
- Gallery: New Leopard build reveals OS far from finished, but earning its stripes (ThinkSecret)
- Mac OS X 10.5 9A321 Screenshots & Info, Changes from previous builds (AeroXP Forums)
- ZFS File System Makes it to Mac OS X Leopard (WorldOfApple).

Apple has officially announced during WWDC 2006 that Leopard would ship during Spring 2007. Steve Jobs also told the audience during the WWDC keynote that there were some super-secret unannounced features on Leopard. We don't know if there's anything more to expect than what we see on this build, but we definitely hope so.

I've might have missed some of the features in the build 9A321, so don't hesitate to use the comments to add them. Screenshots and links are also welcome. I may update the article with more details.

Amazing! Thanks for the

Amazing! Thanks for the report.

Does anyone have information

Does anyone have information regarding the performance of ZFS in the various RAID scenarios? (or more specifically, Apple's implementation of it)

uh-hu. tell us something we

uh-hu. tell us something we don't know already.

I was going to say that

I was going to say that you're a moron...but I guess we already knew that too.

I haven't been to this site

I haven't been to this site in years, but a quick check shows the same "report the obvoius as if it were an exclusive" mentality. Only LoopRumors is more pathetic.

What's the problem with you

What's the problem with you Anonymous reader?

Is that so bad to corroborate information found on other sites?

Like many other sites do, the idea is to have an exhaustive coverage of the Mac news.

At least here you ALWAYS find a link to the source(s). Unlike many very known publications.

As for the exclusive content: you find it on the left block named "Exclusive content".

Just in case you've been confused: this is not MacOSRumors here but MacosXrumors. I launched MacScoop so as to avoid that confusion.

Enough said.

haha, interesting. I'm

haha, interesting.

I'm seriously thinking about disabling anonymous comments :)

I just didn't want to force readers to sign-in. I wanted to let them chose the moment they'll do that.

But I'm afraid I'll have to think about it again.

My bad... I did think this

My bad... I did think this was MacOSRumors (MOSR) and you did say that it was a compilation of web info... I'm man enough to say (anonymously) I'm sorry. I'll add MacScoop to my Mac tab so I don't get it confused again and I won;t post while on double shot espresso again. Again, sorry to create a stir.

Sheesh, Can't we just read

Sheesh,
Can't we just read it for the information that it is instead of having to disect everything. I personally was glad he put it all on one site for me to read and consider. And then there are these whining cry sacks who feel it necessary to inform me that the amount of time spent putting this complilation together wasn't in my best interest to read. Get over yourselves!

Wow what an uproar. What

Wow what an uproar. What sites other than this one were you talking about that does not re-hash old news?

Enough said about

Enough said about MacScoop/MacosXrumors. They're doing a good work.

Regarding Leopard, I hope Steve really has at least one other big feature to announce at MacWorld.

Vista is not as good yet but Microsoft could play the catch-up quicker than expected.

I'm not very worried about

I'm not very worried about Microsoft playing catch-up. They would need to stop supporting backward compatibility with all OS versions before WindowsNT, including Windows 95/98 to really play the OS game well. The DLL install mess alone should be enough for you to stay well away from that mess.

Features they maybe able to replicate, but you will still have to deal with the crashing, security problems and general Microsoft BS.

Microsoft can't play the

Microsoft can't play the catch-up until they re-code everything from scratch.

I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft put Linux as base of their next OS.

So what if someone's

So what if someone's summarizing new features or summarizing a piece of news. If you already know it, just don't read it. Its not like they're forcing anyone to read their sites...
When you read Google news do you go write nasty things about them because they have links to tons of articles about the same subject from different new sources? No. You just pick one, read it, and move on.

I hope Microsoft DOES catch

I hope Microsoft DOES catch up to Apple. It will only force Apple to innovate even further and it will be great for Apple's consumers.

This OS is sounded great,

This OS is sounded great, can't wait to buy it.

Some people are so

Some people are so inconsiderate. This web site is providing a FREE service to inform the reader of someting they may not know and some of the readers have nothing better to do than complain.

One of the reasons this country is full of hate and anxiety is because no one ever takes the time to consider the other guy. Its easier to just rip him up. What an inconsiderate and pathetic group of people.

I praise the web developer of this site for all his hard work and effort.

Happy Holidays...
Don

did u know we pay to web

did u know we pay to web developers for what we get we dont take it free so it is our right to complain and demand people like u are biggest worry for end users one more thing u remember everyone has his own job and he /she should be able to give their best... im not in IT industry doesnt mean i have no right to demand... i demand becoz i pay, if no one pays there will be no industry

I totally agree with Don

I totally agree with Don Perreault. If the jerks that criticize so much don't like it, why don't they just go away? My dear mom taught me that if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything. And what about the golden rule -- treaat others as you would be treated? I say Thanks to the website author... great job rounding up the tidbits and presenting them in an orderly, coherent manner. I'll be back!

Santa left me a Video

Santa left me a Video iPhone.

Seems all those iChat & CoreVideo features in 10.5
+ the (Video iPod + Camera + Wireless + Skype + OhYeahOneMoreThing)
= happy elves.

For some people, complaining

For some people, complaining is the only way they can feel any power - and the more replies they get the more powerful it makes them feel. Imagine what pathetic lives they must lead.

I like seeing similar info on different sites, it allows me to develop my own opinions and not just blindly spout those of others. The world needs variety of news provision - especially on the internet as the TV channels are pretty much all controlled by small groups of right wing billionaire senior proprietors with narrow and self-interested perspectives.
