LED backlight displays in forthcoming Apple notebooks?

Apple has reportedly chosen LED-based backlight technology for the LCD screens of its future notebook line-ups.

The LED-based backlight technology provides better colors and contrast ratio. It may allow Apple and HP to make notebooks with much higher quality displays.

Both Apple and HP are expected to release their first notebooks using this technology starting on the second quarter of this year.

Earlier this year, Samsung announced that all of its displays will be using this technology by 2008. The consumer electronics maker and chips provider has already introduced the SyncMaster XL20, which is a 20.1 inch display that uses LED for its backlighting.

In 2006, displays that use LED for their backlighting represented approximatively 3% of the market, but the technology is poised to see exponential success in the coming years.
