Along with the release of the iPod shuffle new flavors, Apple has quietly made available the Wifi 802.11n enabler for its latest iteration of Mac notebooks and desktops.
The 802.11n standard allows much higher bandwidth than current 802.11 a,b and c standards for wifi connections. This standard is however still in draft status and should be finalized next year. Though the current state of its development allows production.
As recently confirmed by an Apple rep. The company will charge its customers with a $1.99 fee for the firmware enabler. It also comes free with the purchase of an Airport Extreme station.
The updater is compatible with Core 2 Duo based MacBooks, MacBook Pros, iMacs and Xeon based Mac Pros.
It is immediately available exclusively through Apple’s online store.
