Mac OS X Leopard internal roadmap revealed (UPDATE)

UPDATE: Sources provide us follow-up with some changes to the roadmap here.

Sources close to the development of Mac OS X Leopard in Cupertino have provided to MacScoop the project's roadmap from now until the release, which is scheduled on late October.

New Leopard build to be seeded by early July

Anytime from now to early July, Apple will release a new build of Leopard fixing some very annoying issues developers have encountered with Airport as well as several other user Interface, API and Developer Tools issues.

The update will be available to Select and Premium registered ADC (Apple Developer Connection) members but it's not sure whether it will be seeded as a separate build or as a downloadable update. The first possibility is more likely, sources said.

Major build on early August

In a little more than a month, Apple's development team targets a feature-full build. The build that was provided to developers during the World Wide Developers Conference earlier this month is actually not totally feature frozen.

Some minor features are currently being finished for the system. These features will arrive in the August build along with user-interface improvements, sources told MacScoop.

If you expect major "wow" features or interface changes, you will be disappointed. What we may expect is additional settings and some user interface polishing. Among the most criticized parts of the new user interface are the new menu bar and Dock.

We don't exclude the possibility that intermediate builds with minor changes are seeded before this build arrives.

Final Candidate on early September (see follow-up)

The milestone that will follow the total feature-freeze is slated for September, as the target of Apple's internal development team is a totally feature-full and stable Final Candidate version of Mac OS X Leopard.

During this phase, Apple developers will stop implementing and focus on testing the system.

Four to six weeks to go Golden Master

After the Final Candidate, Apple's staff will continue testing Leopard for a period of four to six weeks at most. In early to mid October, Leopard should reach the Golden Master status and Apple will be launching the DVD and packaging production.

Release on late October

Finally, the release is scheduled for late October but could be delayed to early November in case one of the milestones of the roadmap takes more time than expected. Though sources are confident that this won't happen.

I'd rather have polish than

I'd rather have polish than new features at this point in Leopard's development.

What about multitouch? --

What about multitouch? -- It's already incorporated into the iPhone interface, and the iPhone is running Leopard ...

Just to note, the iPhone is

Just to note, the iPhone is running OS X, but not necessarily Leopard... it's obviously some scaled down version of OS X. Therefore, there does not have to be any connection between multi-touch on the phone and on the desktop OS.... it would be cool though.

Semantics. It's still a beta

Semantics. It's still a beta but not going to change much. what can they do in four months? given that apple demonstrated a feature complete version at wwdc and expects to ship it in October, anyone could come up with a roadmap to fill in the gaps using common sense. i'm still waiting to hear about the other 290+ new features that haven't really been discussed. That would be more telling.

250 of those other new

250 of those other new features will be new widgets by Apple and included 3rd party widgets. One or two fonts might also make the list. ;) ... Believe me: Apple counts _everything_ to push these numbers.

My MacBook Pro has

My MacBook Pro has multi-touch in my opinion. What other notebook computer allows scrolling with two fingers instead of one or two fingers click as a right click? Apple notebooks are definitely ahead of the curve for touchpad technology.

I completely agree with

I completely agree with jdawgnoonan - I love the multi-touch functionality of my MacBook Pro and have not seen it in any other laptop. Leaving Windows for Mac was the best decision of my life!

Goodbye Windows, Hello Apple!

While certainly a good

While certainly a good decision, i hope you're exaggerating or really young!

I'm personally looking

I'm personally looking forward to the Autumn release - will time itself nicely for those PC users who are too nervous about buying a Vista PC and are looking for a safer and more reliable Apple option.

Like me. :)

I will definitely be first

I will definitely be first in line to buy the new copy once it is out. I was blown away by some of the new features at WWDC (though I did want to see more new stuff). I think that Leopard is miles ahead of Vista (no surprise mind you).
