Apple to release iPhone SDK for third party developers next year

Apple announced that it will provide a Software Development Kit (SDK), allowing third-party developers to create applications for the iPhone.

The fact Apple's phone was not open to developers was considered as the biggest weakness on the device. Competitors like Nokia or Windows Mobile based phone makers massively criticized Apple for its closed platform.

The kit will be made available early next year, in February, according to Apple's announcement.

In a report posted a couple of days before this year's World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC), MacScoop had revealed that the true SDK was on the way, though it wasn't ready for Apple's developers' event.
