Graphics issues on Apple's latest MacBooks (UPDATEx3)

UPDATEx3: The support note is now back.

UPDATEx2: We tried to reach an Apple PR rep so as to obtain more information on the matter but no one was available to talk to us.

UPDATE: Apple has removed the support note mentioned in our report. We don't think it means the issue is fixed though because as it was stated on the note itself, the document should have been "updated as more information becomes available".

Apple has issued a support note mentioning graphic issues on the latest generation of MacBooks released earlier this month.

The support note specifically says that the new integrated Intel GMA i965 chip inside the new MacBooks may suffer from performance and display issues when used in intensive 3D tasks such as recent games:

Issue or symptom

The use of intensive 3D graphics in some advanced gaming applications may have difficulty running correctly on this MacBook's Intel i965 chipset, exhibiting issues with shading, textures, and performance. The MacBook is able able to run a wide variety of consumer-oriented games.

Products affected

MacBook (13-inch Late 2007)
Solution

Apple is actively working on potential solutions to MacBook graphics issues.

This document will be updated as more information becomes available.

The Intel GMA X3100 offers new features such as hardware accelerated Pixel Shader among others, making, in theory, some not too old games run quite well on it. However, it's well known that integrated chips aren't intended to run the latest games and it's understandable that some of them can have strange behavior.

Meanwhile, Apple appears to be "actively working" on the subject as stated in the support note. We can just hope this is an issue related to drivers rather than a hardware misconception.

We can be pretty reassured that Apple already communicates on the subject through this support note, but we would recommend our readers to postpone their purchase until Apple provides further details, especially if you're planning to use this MacBook for even some occasional gaming.

I can confirm that this

I can confirm that this issue exists. Avernum will not display correctly on the Macbook (Late 2007) and is unplayable. Heroes of Might and Magic V will operate correctly, but the graphics are incorrectly rendered - anything rendered appears to be "washed out" - either too light or too dark with incorrect colours.
