Briefly: iPod battery replacement, July the 7th event, Apple to become a phone company?
MacRumors' readers noticed today that Apple has dropped the price of the iPod battery replacement program to $59 from $99. Apple was critisized for the quality of its first iPods and on the price of the battery replacement program during the first year of the existence of the device.
Last week we mentioned French Mac-centric sites that claimed to have received invitations from a press event organized by Apple on July the 7th. Reports claimed this event indeed hapenned but wasn't the occasion of any announcement.

IBM announces the PowerPC 970MP
According to a press release published on its Japanese web site, IBM officially announced, today, the release of the PowerPC 970MP.
This processor has longly been rumoured (since last year) to be a candidate for Apple's next-generation high-end Macs. Some readers had even hinted clues on multi-core processors support in Apple's developer utilities.
The company has also announced the characteristics of its PowerPC 970FX, the low power version of its 970 processor. It consumes 13W in low clock speeds (1.2 and 1.4Ghz), and 16W at 1.6Ghz.
Firefox for Intel-based Macs
The Inquirer reports that the Mozilla foundation has succeeded in compiling FireFox on the "MacTel" platform.
A chief developer of the project, Josh Aas told on his blog that the Mozilla Firefox team has worked hands in hands with Apple engineers to accomplish this port.
Although this is not a final release and some bugs remain, it's quite good news for the Mac users community to see an important web browser project coming on the new platform.
New iTunes phone pictures (UPDATE)
Engadget posts new pictures of the iTunes phone. The pictures actually show a Motorola E790 model running iTunes which looks really different from the model revealed in earlier pictures.
Considering there will be several iTunes compatible phones, it is not necessary the first model that will be released and may simply be a prototype, according to the site.
