Apple has just posted an update to iTunes, bringing it to version 7.2 and enabling the purchase or the upgrade of your library to DRM-free music.

"With iTunes 7.2, preview and purchase iTunes Plus music—new higher-quality, DRM-free music downloads from participating music labels." The description of the software update states.

The update weights 29.2MB and is available through the software update utility or through Apple's dedicated web site [1].

Apple and EMI announced [2] a few weeks ago that they would release a DRM-free offer as Premium downloads on iTunes with 256Kbit encoding bitrate as opposed to 128Kbit for versions that include DRM. The premium downloads cost of $1.29 or $0.30 for a song upgrade. Albums remain at $9.99.

This feature is now officially branded "iTunes Plus" and follows exactly the terms announced by Apple and EMI.

The offer is available only for EMI tracks for the moment but should be expanded to other labels and maybe majors by the end of the year.
