WWDC 2003: Definitely the year of the Mac. Panther detailed report coming.

Submitted by Alexandros Roussos on Tue, 2003-06-24 22:39

As I had told you on my Friday's posting, I wasn't able to cover the WWDC 2003 event but I think it wasn't a serious problem for you anyway as a lot of sites covered the event this year.

I think this year's WWDC was the most exciting Apple event since the introduction of the PowerMac G4. This time it's the PowerMac G5 that is released and Apple's outlook is lightening. I'm totally sure that this new high end line will sell very well. Actually I'd love to buy one of those G5-based beasts but my Mac is still quite recent so I'm sticking with it at least until 2004. I think, although I usually don't post hardware-related information, that it's interesting to mention some mails from reliable sources who claim that G5 based xServe announcements are imminent and that we can also expect the PowerBook line to be updated this summer.

For the WWDC 2003, Steve Jobs also made a cool preview of Panther with all its new features and improvements listed on Apple's site. Faithful readers will notice that the rumours I've published lately were, overall, quite accurate and I'm particularly happy about it as I now have a couple of new sources that I can rely on.

As usual, we had some cool surprises on Panther that no one could predict (new .Mac sync features, fax features, File Vault, Pixlet and other things). I've noticed that Steve Jobs did not precisely specify a release date for Panther which means that there may be some delay in the development of Mac OS X 10.3.

Steve Jobs' Panther demo was, nevertheless, quite incomplete but it's understandable as he had a lot of exciting news to give in a restricted time. That's why I'm already working on a much more precise review of Panther that is coming later this week along with some screenshots, while waiting for my detailed report on Panther. Don't hesitate to send questions, feedback or rumor information here.
